Image Tracing Parameters

Edge Threshold (Brightness)128

Controls which pixel brightness levels trigger an outline edge.

Trace Resolution (Sample Interval)3px

Lower interval generates higher precision but larger file sizes.

Vector Line-Traced Outlines0 segments

How to Use

1

Upload PNG image

Upload a high-contrast PNG image (black on white works best).

2

Adjust tracing settings

Set threshold, smoothing, and curve tolerance for the auto-trace.

3

Download DXF

Download the traced DXF file for use in CNC or CAD software.

How PNG to DXF Conversion Works

Unlike SVG-to-DXF conversion (which converts existing vector data), PNG-to-DXF requires an additional step: image tracing (also called vectorisation or raster-to-vector conversion). This process analyses pixel values in the PNG, identifies edge contours, and converts those contours into vector paths.

The resulting vector paths are then exported as DXF entities — typically polylines or splines — which can be imported into any CAD or CNC software. The quality of the output depends heavily on the input image quality. For best results, use high-resolution, high-contrast images with clean edges.

Real-World Examples & Use Cases

Logo Cutting

Convert a PNG company logo to DXF for cutting on a vinyl cutter or CNC router.

Scanned Drawing to CAD

Scan a hand-drawn sketch, clean it up in an image editor, then convert the PNG to DXF for use in AutoCAD.

Frequently Asked Questions

What images work best?
High-contrast images with clear edges produce the best traces. Black silhouettes on white backgrounds are ideal. Avoid photographs or complex gradients.
How accurate is the auto-trace?
For clean line art, the trace is highly accurate. For complex artwork or low-contrast images, manual cleanup in a CAD tool may be needed.
What is the tracing algorithm used?
We use a browser-side implementation of the Potrace algorithm, the same engine used by Inkscape's "Trace Bitmap" feature.
