Converting DXF to SVG for Design and Web Use

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is the standard for CAD and manufacturing, but it is not natively supported in web browsers or graphic design tools. SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), on the other hand, is the web standard — supported by every browser, Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, Figma, and many more applications.

This converter reads your DXF file in the browser, parsing entities like LINE, ARC, CIRCLE, POLYLINE, LWPOLYLINE, SPLINE, and TEXT, and generates a clean SVG file from them. The conversion is entirely client-side — your DXF file never leaves your device.

Use Cases

The most common use case is taking a technical drawing or CNC part design from AutoCAD or a similar tool and bringing it into a graphic design workflow. Another popular use is rendering DXF drawings on websites without any server-side infrastructure.

Real-World Examples & Use Cases

Web Display of CAD Drawings

Convert architectural DXF floor plans to SVG for display on a property website.

Further Editing in Inkscape

Open a CNC part drawing in Inkscape for labelling or presentation by first converting from DXF to SVG.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which DXF versions are supported?
DXF R12, R14, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2010, and 2013 are parsed. Most standard DXF entities (lines, arcs, polylines, circles, splines) are supported.
Are DXF layers preserved?
Yes. Each DXF layer is mapped to an SVG group with a corresponding id and class, making them easy to work with in Inkscape or CSS.
What about DXF blocks?
Block references (INSERT entities) are expanded into their component geometry in the SVG output.
Can I open the SVG in Inkscape?
Yes. The output SVG uses standard paths and groups and opens correctly in Inkscape, Illustrator, and all major browsers.
