The Mathematics of Text Comparison: Myers Diff Algorithm and Line-by-Line Changes

Tracking changes between two versions of a document, source code file, or configuration profile is fundamental to software engineering, collaborative writing, and legal audits. Version control systems like Git, collaborative tools like Google Docs, and code review platforms like GitHub depend entirely on automated text difference algorithms to calculate and highlight what was added, removed, or modified.

The Text Diff Checker computes differences between original and modified text strings locally in your browser. With side-by-side split and unified inline views, it highlights additions in green and deletions in red without sending your confidential text across external servers.

The Eugene Myers Diff Algorithm

Most modern diff engines (including Git's internal diff engine) implement the Myers Difference Algorithm, published by computer scientist Eugene W. Myers in 1986. The algorithm models the task of comparing two strings as finding the Shortest Edit Script (SES) on an Edit Graph:

  • The Edit Graph: An $N imes M$ grid where $N$ is the number of lines in Document A and $M$ is the number of lines in Document B.
  • Horizontal Moves: Moving one step right represents deleting a line from Document A.
  • Vertical Moves: Moving one step down represents inserting a line into Document B.
  • Diagonal Moves: If a line in Document A is identical to a line in Document B, the path moves diagonally down and right at zero computational cost.
  • The Objective: Find the path from the top-left coordinate $(0,0)$ to the bottom-right coordinate $(N, M)$ with the maximum number of diagonal moves and the minimum number of horizontal/vertical edits.

Granularity Modes: Line, Word, and Character Diffs

Different auditing workflows require distinct levels of comparison granularity:

Diff Granularity Mode Comparison Mechanism Optimal Use Case
Line-by-Line Diff Splits input by newline characters ( ). Evaluates whole lines as atomic tokens. Programming code review, configuration files, SQL queries, Git commits.
Word-by-Word Diff Splits input by whitespace boundaries. Highlights specific words altered inside a sentence. Copywriting, legal contracts, editorial manuscripts, translation reviews.
Character-by-Character Diff Compares raw characters sequentially. Exposes micro-edits, spaces, and typo fixes. Cryptographic hash strings, API tokens, single-letter typos, code minification inspection.

Zero-Trust Data Security for Proprietary Code

Comparing sensitive codebases, financial disclosures, confidential client contracts, or production database credentials via online tools carries grave data leakage risks. ConvertWithMi executes diff calculations entirely within your browser's local JavaScript runtime. Your text never leaves your device and is never logged to external servers.
