Seamlessly Migrate Brother Designs to Janome Memory Craft

Brother and Janome represent the two most popular consumer and prosumer embroidery machine ecosystems in the world. However, their file architectures are fundamentally incompatible: Brother machines run on the proprietary .PES format, while Janome machines run on .JEF.

Our PES to JEF Converter eliminates this barrier. It decodes Brother PES and PEC binary records, maps Brother thread numbers to Janome thread equivalents, and compiles native JEF bytecode compatible with all Janome Memory Craft machines.

Technical Conversion Architecture

  1. PEC Container Extraction: The parser reads the PES header, jumps to the #PEC0001 sub-container, and parses the 7-bit/12-bit variable-length stitch stream.
  2. Thread Palette Translation: Brother PEC files store color stops as an array of indices referencing the Brother embroidery thread chart. Our system translates these indices into standard Janome thread palette numbers, preserving the aesthetic design intent.
  3. Coordinate Transformation & Centering: Stitch deltas are integrated into an absolute coordinate grid. The bounding box is calculated and centered at (0, 0), and bounding extents (Top, Right, Bottom, Left) are formatted in decimillimeters (0.1 mm) for the JEF header.
  4. Hoop Code Optimization: The overall dimensions are evaluated against Janome hoop specifications (SQ14, RE20, SQ20, RE28b) to embed the optimal hoop code descriptor into the header.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will thread colors match when converting PES to JEF?▼
Yes. Brother PES files store thread colors using standard Brother PEC color indices. Our converter extracts these colors and maps them to the corresponding Janome thread palette numbers, allowing your Janome touchscreen to display authentic color previews.
What if a Brother design is sized for a 5" x 7" hoop?▼
Brother 5" × 7" hoops measure 130 × 180 mm. On a Janome machine, this design fits comfortably inside the standard Janome RE20 hoop (140 × 200 mm) or SQ20 hoop (200 × 200 mm). Our converter assigns the matching Janome hoop code automatically.
Can I convert multi-color applique designs from PES to JEF?▼
Yes. Stop codes used in Brother PES applique patterns (placement stitch, tackdown stitch, and final satin cover) are faithfully converted into Janome 0x80 0x01 color change commands so your Janome machine pauses for fabric placement.
