DST: The Universal Embroidery Format

DST (Data Stitch Tajima) is the closest thing the embroidery industry has to a universal format. Developed by Tajima Industries in Japan, it is supported by machines from Tajima, Barudan, Brother, Toyota, ZSK, and virtually every other manufacturer. When in doubt about format compatibility, DST is the safest choice.

DST stores stitch coordinates as relative moves (dx, dy) and simple commands (jump, cut, colour stop). It does not store absolute coordinates or actual thread colour data — this means the embroidery operator must set up the thread colours on the machine according to the design's colour sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is DST format?
DST (Data Stitch Tajima) is the most widely supported embroidery file format in the industry. It was developed by Tajima Industries and is supported by virtually all industrial embroidery machines.
Does DST store colour information?
DST files store colour stop commands but not actual thread colours. The operator must manually set up the correct threads in the machine in the correct sequence.
What is the difference between DST and PES?
DST is the industrial standard, supported by all machines. PES is Brother's proprietary format with richer colour data. For commercial use, DST is preferred.
